Spring Cleaning: A Beginners Guide

Spring has sprung and with it comes that most hated of activities: spring cleaning. Admittedly, it’s satisfying to get rid of all those winter cobwebs but for many of us, the thought of cleaning the shower grout or vacuuming under the bed is exhausting in of itself. If you’re one of these people, don’t stress, we’ve developed a simple guide to spring cleaning that will get you cleaning and feeling house proud in no time at all.

Develop a game plan

The first step of any effective cleaning campaign is to come up with a strategy. This involves things like deciding how long you’re going to spend doing your cleaning, what implements you will need top clean, and which areas will take the most time to manage. Go around your house taking general notes of what needs to be done in each room. If something is broken or needs fixing, make a note of what you’ll need to buy to get it fixed, the same goes for things that require specialist cleaning products or implements. Once you’ve bought everything you need, it’s time to clean.

Go room to room

Going room by room is the best way to make big cleaning jobs manageable. There are plenty of checklists for spring cleaning to be found online which list all the different jobs you’ll have to do room by room. Download one of these, print it out and cross off the jobs as you do them. Another great idea is to have a box where you put items that belong in other rooms as you clean. This way you’re not wandering from room to room replacing objects and getting distracted.

Be brutal

When it comes to decluttering of any description, it pays to be brutal. Toss anything that’s dirty, broken, past its expiry date, or never used. If you’re still unsure about whether to toss it or keep it, ask yourself these 5 questions.

Invest in storage

Even after decluttering, there is inevitably going to be some things you don’t have the space for, it’s here that you have to get clever about storage. Snap up a couple of chic vintage style storage baskets or invest in a piece of multifunctional furniture like a storage ottoman or TV cabinet which will enhance your interior and conceal unsightly clutter.
